How Liverpool will look this season in a 4-4-2 formation

We seem to have about 15 midfielders at present, and who to pick really revolves around the formation. As we already decided on this it was easier than first thought.

Left midfield. Stewart Downing. He will be ahead of Maxi who despite his end of season goal scoring heroics just does not seem to have the consistency in his game Rumours of Maxi leaving still leave uncertainty (hence my doubt for his place on the bench). Downing should become one of the first names on the team sheet with his ability to get crosses in for the strikers.

Right midfield. Dirk Kuyt. Won’t hear a bad word against him. A legend in the making, (if not already). Duracell Dirk epitomises everything I love in a player. Hard work, passion, commitment, loves the club. He scores goals, and will provide adequate backup for the central striker.

Attacking Mid. Captain Stevie Gerrard. Running out of time to win the championship for us, but despite injuries is still one of the best players in the league. Many can fill in for him on the odd occasion, but do not have the class Gerrard has (yet).

Defensive Mid. Another tough decision. Harsh on Brazilian international Lucas, who has ridden the criticism and has got better and better since the departure of first Alonso, then Mascherano last season. Also missing out one of our best players last season, Meireles. I Just cannot see how he will be accommodated, but a great player to have around. We finally went for another new signing, Charlie Adam. Blackpool’s captain and best player last year, should flourish under the guidance of Gerrard and tutelage of fellow Scot Dalglish. However I would not be surprised to see Henderson or Aqualani take this spot with Gerrard a bit deeper.

Up front, again a bit too easy. Behind the striker has to be Luis Suarez. Looking good already in the Copa America this summer, his performances last season needed refining in areas, but anyone who pulls a Man U defence apart as easily as he did is a sure fire starter, alongside Andy Carroll. The big Geordie was unplayable when fit and firing for Newcastle last season, and in occasional glimpses for us. Realistically at present only Kuyt can lead the line and cover is needed.

The subs bench would look something like this, with Henderson providing general midfield cover and David Ngog’s experience currently edging Daniel Pacheco

GK. Doni
Def. Skrtel
Def. Kelly
Wide Mid. Maxi (or Cole)
Def Mid. Lucas
Mid. Henderson (or Aqualani)
Forward. Ngog

Just missing out, Jones, Robinson, Flanagan, Aurelio, Kryiakos, Wilson, Spearing, Aqualani, Meireles, Cole, Shelvey, Pacheco (plus Anderlect bound? Jovanovic), not to mention future stars, Coady, Sterling, Wisdom and Morgan.

We suddenly look like a squad that can challenge for honours again. We all have our opinions, but with what we currently have available let me know what you think.
