Whenever any transfer speculation or gossip to do with Spanish players comes out, I tend to pay more attention to what Guillem Balague says as his information is fairly accurate most times and it is coming from a reliable source. Liverpool have been linked with Juan Mata for many years now, ever since the days of Rafa Benitez. The Spanish winger is almost set to be sold this summer by Valencia as the club is in a serious financial situation and they need to sell players to survive.

It is thought that a bid of between £20 – £25 million will be enough to prize the winger away from Valencia. Even though Mata has a £50 million buy out clause it is thought that Valencia will be willing to listen to offers less than that.

Manchester United and Manchester City are both also thought to be interested in Mata and we know if it comes down to a bidding war, Liverpool will have no chance against Manchester City. The lure of Champions League football may also sway Mata to join either of the two Manchester sides. In the past we could have relied on the strong Spanish influence at Liverpool to get Mata join us but now with only Pepe Reina left, that is a difficult draw card to use.

So if Mata is indeed up for sale, I believe that Liverpool should put in a bid for him as we desperately need a winger of his quality if we are unable to get the likes of Ashley Young and Aaron Lennon.

Guillem Balague is accurate? Are you insane?

He pumps out as much garbage as any of the newspapers do….and sometimes gets one or two right. He’s full of himself, and has been for years. The man makes a living bs’ing just like the so-called journalists do.

Mata would be nice…but what a joke.

Yeah, it’d be great if we manage to lure him to Liverpool. Not to mention, it’d also be nice if we can get another talented winger in Eden Hazard. In addition, we’ll be needing a centre back, left back and a back up striker.
We can get the likes of Mammadou Sakho, Fabio Coentrao/Aly Cissokho and Bojan Krkic/Connor Wickham. Looking at the figures Kenny will be given, I think it is possible this transfers can happen. Eventough the chances of luring them to Liverpool are very slim, we can always try…?

I don’t think Mata is the right person for the right job. Don’t get me wrong. This guy is good player but not the right player Liverpool FC required. Liverpool need a very direct & straight to the point players. Player like Suarez..but not ANdy Carroll…i still find him not the striker that Liverpool FC expected to be. WIll make Liverpool frustrated.

  5. Rory says:

Yeah, totally agree with philip, all we need are top level players, Mata is a good player but not great and throw away 25 (25!) millions just because we have it’ll be a stupid thing like those of real madrid…we need a fast-quality-young striker that can play wide like Neymar, Aguero or Alexis Sanchez to create (with Suarez) space for Carrol…every time i heard about middle level players like Mata, Gervinho, Arda Turan, Honda ecc…and that with those we’ll win the premier and the champions league i always make some good laugh…

  6. kieran says:

To be fair a lot of people are saying we desperatly need a left back, but quite honestly i don’t think so, maybe as a replacement, but if martin kelly is fit he can go RB and glen johnson can go LB that worked for us last year, martin kelly is good, young and homegrown what more can you ask for… also signing juan mata along with another decent winger (harles n’zogbia or stuart downing) would be great supply for carroll raul and gerrard would also be great supply for suarez

    Juan WHO ?!!!

    Whats he won ?
Can he even speak English ?
Has he even ever so much as set foot in England let alone kicked a single ball in any of its Leagues ?

  8. Marshi says:

Mata is a solid winger. Been a bit unlucky with injuries, but was in the World Cup winning squad in 2010, won the Euro u19 & the Copa del Rey. He also has a degree, so learning English wouldn’t be beyond him. there are plenty of world class players who’ve never played in England. Messi, Xavi, Neymar….

I personally would go all out for Erik Lamela. He’s the real deal, sweet left foot, quick and big.

I made the point on another thread that 99% of Spanish players are damn good players in the Spanish League , which like Scotland really only has two teams worth talking about & sporadically might produce a 3’rd or 4’th but generally speaking its a non competitive League which is why they value the Champions League so highly , its the only genuine competition they play in where as even our training sessions are more competitive than their games !
It doesnt matter if they are world class or not if they cant buckle down to the grind of everyday cultural life in England , most of them cant & they have no intention of doing so , they just come over here for the higher wages & a larger media profile , its just basic greed with them .
Mata may well be a fine player but I’m sick of thieving foreigners cheating us outa our money to pay their sky high wages & they dont even make an honest effort to adapt .
Give me one Stewart Downing & I’ll give you 10 Juan “Sheet” Matas & I promise you over the next 10 seasons , season in & season out Downing is going to deliver twice as much quality over 38 League games than any Juan “Sheet” Mata , or Florence Malouda standard player .
If I am wrong & Villa , who need to take a risk on unproven foreigners get great service outa him then so be it , we will buy him from Villa in 2 seasons time .
Liverpool have always been a spending club & never a selling club so if we need a foreigner because he has a proven higher standard than what we got ?
We can always buy em from one of our Neighboring smaller clubs like Spurs .
