Mario Balotelli could well become an ‘icon’ for Liverpool supporters according to former striker John Aldridge, reports the Daily Star.

Balotelli completed his £16million switch to Anfield on Monday, following an 18-month stint at AC Milan.

The Italian has previously won the Premier League during his time with Manchester City, and whilst viewed as a controversial figure by many in the game, Aldridge believes the 24-year-old has what it takes to become a star at Anfield.

“He provides another option and we’ve got a lot of games this season, so Brendan has plenty of options now,” Aldridge said.

“The manager will have a plan. It could be Balotelli going through the middle with Daniel playing off him or out wide, as he did to great effect last season.

“He could be phenomenal and he’s the type of player who will be endearing to the fans. He could be iconic.”
