Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has confirmed his interest in joining Liverpool during the January transfer window according to the Metro.

One area that Liverpool need strengthening in is the central midfield and a player like Onazi would bring much needed physicality to the side. The 20-year old Nigerian international has said, ‘I would jump at the chance to play in the Premier League.

‘Liverpool? They are a huge team and are attractive to any footballer. I could see myself playing for them.’

Onazi featured for Nigeria on Monday as the Super Eagles played out a 2-2 against Italy in London. The midfielder put in a solid display for his country’s side which he has been part of since 2012. Onanzi was part of the Nigerian side that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013. Operating as part of Nigeria’s midfield three alongside Sunday Mba and John Obi Mikel, Onazi predominantly worked as the defensive shield, working relentlessly to provide a platform for the other two, regaining possession and keeping the ball moving sensibly.

The current Liverpool side only has Lucas as the out-and-out defensive midfielder and Onazi would come in and be his competition. Looking at the video below, you can see that Onazi is comfortable passing the ball as he collects it from the back four.

Lazio are believed to want about £6million for his services, with Inter Milan and Ajax also known to be interested. This could be another January bargain signing for Liverpool at that fee as Onazi has all the potential to turn into a very good defensive midfielder of the future.
