With the January transfer window fast approaching, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed the need to strengthen again during this window and hopefully get signings that make an immediate impact on the first team like he did last January by bringing in Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.

‘In January it’s difficult but our recruitment guys are working hard to identify that type of player to come in,’ said Rodgers in the Daily Mail. ‘Last year Daniel Sturridge came in and has been brilliant, so there are players out there.

‘But you’ve got to dig deeper and harder to get them in. Sometimes they might not be household names but they could have the quality. When Daniel came in there was a big question mark and he’s answered those questions. Coutinho, you can see, is a top young player.

‘There will be players who want to come but they’ll maybe want Champions League football. We can’t worry about it, we just need to find players who can make the difference for us.

‘Last season we made two great signings who gave us an injection of quality we needed. We will look to do that this January.’

By the time January comes around, hopefully Liverpool will still be in the top four and maybe even having a realistic push for the title. If that is the situation then it will be vital for FSG to give Rodgers some cash to spend so we can maintain the momentum we have.

Looking at the squad as it stands right now, two key areas need addressing in January and those are central midfield and left back.

Our central midfield needs a defensive midfielder to come in and compete with Lucas. The Brazilian is the only out-and-out defensive midfielder we have and thus another option is needed in that position. We are lacking some creativity and goals from central midfield to so an attack minded central midfielder would also be required.

Looking at the left back position, Jose Enrique is the first choice there and Rodgers brought in Aly Cissokho on loan to cover Enrique. Cissokho has not covered himself in much glory yet and it would be a plan to bring in a better attack minded left back on a permanent basis and then let Cissokho return to Valencia in the summer.

Another position Rodgers may look at strengthening but is not a must is our strike force. We need a player to come in who can step in for Suarez and Sturridge when they are not available. Iago Aspas is meant to be that player but the Spanish striker has struggled at Anfield since he joined in the summer from Celta Vigo.

Hopefully Rodgers makes some decent signings come January that can come in and make an impact on the starting lineup. We have enough fringe and squad players available but strengthening the starting eleven is key right now.

I agree that a central midfield enforcer type would be ideal.

However, as for a left back, the way Jack Robinson is pulling up trees at Blackpool I just cannot see us using any of our Budget in this position.
If Robbo continues to perform out of his skin, next year will be a straight fight between him and Enrique.
We are agreed that Cissokho wont sign permanently!
