Lucas Leiva drives mixed opinions among the Liverpool faithful: some love him and some hate him. Where you lie on the Lucas debate is up for argument and I have been part of many Lucas debates which go on until the whee hours of the morning.

One thing I am sure many fans are pretty much in agreement with is that Liverpool need another Lucas type player; a defensive midfielder. We saw last season when Lucas got injured that our midfield struggled by not having a natural defence minded midfielder. Now Liverpool need to bring in a player to compete with Lucas, and either replace him or step in for him when he is not available.

Reports coming out of Portuguese paper O Jogo, have linked Liverpool with a move for 25-year old Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic. The reports suggest that Matic is a priority signing for Rodgers during the January transfer window.

Matic was named Portugal’s Primeira Liga Player of the Year for his performances last season, after winning the monthly award three times. The midfielder had a spell for Chelsea between 2009 and 2011 but only featured twice for the Blues before he was sent to Benfica as part of the deal that bought David Luiz to Chelsea. It is also suggested that Chelsea are also interested in acquiring the services of Matic again now that he is a much more established player.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Matic would cost Liverpool €35.5million which is a large transfer fee and I am not sure if Liverpool would be able to afford it. But that is the kind of money we need to be spending if we want to continue our push for the top 4.

Based on the few clips in the video above, one thing is clear about Matic, he is a great physical presence and that is something we need in out central midfield. Matic would be able to boss teams in midfield, win the ball back and start off a quick attack with the outlet of Gerrard. If Liverpool do indeed sign Matic then Lucas will have his work cut out as I believe the Benfica man would walk straight into the Liverpool side ahead of Lucas.
