Whilst Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for a new striker this January or in the summer, The Metro is reporting that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on events at Barcelona with regards to their French international defender Eric Abidal.

Now signing a defender is not a priority for Liverpool right now or even in the summer but Abidal’s current Barcelona contract expires at the end of this season and he is now able to talk to new clubs unless he decides to sign a two year contract extension that he is being offered by Barcelona.

Abidal can play anywhere along the back four but is best suited as a left-back. We currently have Jose Enrique filling in at left-back and he has done a fantastic job since he arrived in the summer. Fabio Aurelio is our back-up left-back, although he is injury prone he is still a valuable asset when he is fit.

If Liverpool are to sign Abidal on a free transfer in the summer, it would be a good piece of business in my opinion as he would provide experienced cover to our defence.
