Why are Liverpool failing to score more goals?
Finishing is by far the most critical attribute in any top class football team, and you only have to look at Manchester City who spent close to £40million on a consummate finisher such as Sergio Aguero to know that. We have spent £35million on Andy Carroll to such a job, but patience will be needed.
At 22, he will need time, and as Damien Comolli said to Liverpoolfc.tv yesterday, the signings that have been made have the long term in mind:
“It’s not a work for one season, it’s a work for two, three, four seasons, especially when you are investing in young players, as we’ve done. Hopefully we’ll reflect back on the summer of 2011 – which was crucial, we knew that – and then we’ll be happy with the work we’ve done.”
The likes of Henderson, Carroll and Suarez are all still in their early twenties. They will develop as players, and their talents along with their finishing will develop over time. Considering these factors, the Reds should not be overly concerned about the immediate present, especially due to the promise which has already been on display.
