Forget Scott Dan, Ryan Shawcross or Gary Cahill to be the new centre-back signing for Liverpool. Reports today are suggesting that Liverpool are closing in on Uruguay’s centre-back Sebastian Coates.

Coates who is only 20-years-old was named the Best Young Player at this summer’s Copa America as he helped Uruguay win the title. The young defender was expected to secure a move to FC Porto after a proposed move to São Paulo collapsed earlier this summer but it now looks like he will be headed to the Premier League with Liverpool and Manchester City both interested.

Now if Coates is to chose between the two clubs, the influence of Luis Suarez at Anfield may help the defender join us for a fee thought to be £12million. With Liverpool having let Soto go to Wolfsburg, we need to sure-up our central defence.

Coates himself is not sure about his future at this stage. “This week I will talk about offers and decide whether to go or stay here”, Coates told Ovacion.

What do you think of this potential signing? Should we rather sign someone like Cahill or Dann who have Premier League experience?

great player. Would love to see him playing for Liverpool. He has a great future.

  2. red 33 says:

Profile, investment and price tag wise surely Coates is excellent choice than cahill(too expensive)while Dann is average, hopefully liverpool will go for coates and the otherway round.

  3. ynwa says:

Not Dann, Not Cahill, both average, Cahill would not be still playing for Bolton, at his age if he was better than average. I say COATES is the way to go, will also help, SUAREZ settle better, so really, it makes sense to go for COATES, an excellent defender, even at his age!!!!!

  4. Cayceejoel says:

Kenny knew premier league player cost more, with the hype about Coates, it means he’s a goods player for the now and future LFC,It will also help Suarez to settle in well,if not let’s get someone rugged that can competite with our present defender .YNWA

he´s a great one, I saw in the americas cup!!! great move!!

  6. njanja says:

I see us going for Cahil. Due to the offensive nature of South American football they are more comfortable in the full backs, mid field or in the attack.

  8. Jevon says:

Liverpool’s offer for Sebastian Coates of Nacional is around $6m – or £3.6m

  10. stevie says:

Sounds like a good player. Might have a problem securing a work permit though,

    • Nelson Mandella says:

He has Anglo-French roots(ancestral) which would we cited when LFC applies for his work permit. We may nt even need an appeal to get a work permit for him.

  11. Nelson Mandella says:

This is the deal. This is a player that has a very good chance to become the best defender in the world. He is 6ft5 and very solid in d air and would be a menace in to attackers. He is also great on d ground. As a south American he also uses the ball absolutely well. At last I’m nt sad we missed out on phil Jones. I’m looking forward to having Enrique,Agger, Coates,Kelly. What a defence?
