Liverpool are on the verge of signing Jose Enrique from Newcastle for £5.5million. Liverpool have been searching for a new left-back all summer as Fabio Aurelio is too injury prone and Jack Robinson is not quite ready to be a first team regular.

Adding Enrique to the Liverpool backline will now give us a pretty solid back four going into the start of the season. Glen Johnson will miss the first two weeks of the season with a thigh injury and I can not see Enrique being thrown straight into the starting lineup against Sunderland come Saturday if the deal does go through, so it may be a couple more weeks until we see a back four of Johnson, Carragher, Agger and Enrique.

Some fans have questioned Enrique’s defensive abilities but I am sure it is something that can be worked on on the training pitch. One of Enrique’s best performances last season for Newcastle was in their match against Arsenal which they came back from four goals down to tie 4-4. Courtesy of ElPistolero1982, you can have a look at highlights of Enrique in that match and see what we can expect from the Spanish defender at Liverpool.

  1. the boy is not the best in the position but he will give us peacce of mind to have options in that position.
5.5 million for him is good buy so am happy that promblem is solved ……now we need central defender to secure the top two finish.

Jesus, really? The two best things I can take from this video are that he looks solid but I thank the Risen Lord Jesus Himself that we didn’t spend any more than 6 million on him.

Surely it must be difficult to use the following words as a means of praising a defender without laughing: ‘One of Enrique’s best performances last season for Newcastle was in their match against Arsenal which they came back from four goals down to tie 4-4’ ????!!!!

Not too sure about his distribution in that clip. He seemed to lump the ball forward a lot and lose possession. Not all his long field passes and crosses found the target as well. Enrique did okay on some of his dribbles, seemed to have pace and strength when required but sad to say not in the same league as Evra and Cole. Hopefully he will develop better quickly and is still a lot better than Insua. Enrique can plaster this hole while we try to develop Robinson (or even Flannigan) into established Premier League LBs.
