Many reports today are suggesting that Liverpool are targeting Reading striker Shane Long to join the club this summer and provide backup for Suarez and Carroll. Long managed to score 28 goals last season for Reading in the Championship but that was not enough to help Reading back into the Premier League. Now based on that form, West Ham have reportedly put in a £4million bid for the 24-year-old but it was rejected with Reading asking for £7million.

With Liverpool set to let David Ngog leave this summer, we need another striker in our squad but is Long the right kind of player we need? I do not think so in my opinion. The fact that he scored 28 goals in the Championship does not mean he will do the same in the Premiership. He is young talent which fits into FSG’s buying policy but there is no way he is worth £7million.

In May, Reading owner Sir John Madejski said that Celtic will have to pay around £20million to lure Shane Long to Parkhead as the Scottish club were interested in signing him.

The rumours also suggest that Liverpool have had scouts sent to look over Long who has 21 caps for Ireland.

Now would you rather have Long as the backup striker or David Ngog?

Below is a video showing highlights from last season of Long’s performances for Reading courtesy of YouTube user rydum8.

Does being an Irish citizen and playing international football for Ireland still count as being British?

  2. Dylan says:

Shane Long was born in Tipperary IRELAND? Does this make him British? eh no

Looks a little bit like torres .. i will love seeing him playing for liverpool ..
i think he is quite good and still can improve, moreover he is quite fast, a great skill for a striker.
Liverpool should buy him if the price is reasonable.

    British?????

I would take him over Ngog any day!!! I think we should sign him and get rid of Ngog. But I am not forgetting about the last Irish striker we had, Robbie Keane and how he arrived with so much promise but only for him to be a major flop! I hope the same would not happen to Long if he signed.

Why are we not focusing on getting an older experienced striker, that is what we need! Someone who can come on in the last 20 minutes and make and instant impact on the game.

He’s a striker with a massive future.always plays well in internationals, always scores goals.id love it if we landed him,but id reckon it’d take 10-12 mill to prise him from Reading, which is a lot.as for him v ngog, hes had his chance, and wasted it.

I prefer this guy to ngog. It will be perfect if will sell ngog and get this guy. Please liverpool give pacheco some more chance..

I’m not conviced about Long’s ability.
I think He’s not the skills required to play with Liverpool Football Club. Surely He would rather to have Long in the squad to replace N’gog, but the fact He’s better than N’gog doesn’t make him a player Who match Liverpool’s standars.

I want rodallega, and pls give pacheco and insua a shot!

Looks like a great catch. Very similar to Torres in his style of play, but looks like he cab very easily adapt his style to work on either wing. Couple of months under dalglish and I doubt he’d be far off the level that Walcott or maybe even Lennon play at.

    Nuts

  12. scouser says:

If he is willing to sit on the bench then we should get him. Def better than Ngog. We still need another winger if Downing gets injured we are back to square one width no width in the side.

  13. gilbert says:

I think we should show some serious biz by signing hugo and scott dann not shane long.

  14. brother jon says:

@Joe- eff no!!what kind of question is that? Irish is Irish. (i’m an african, and even I know that);)

and while i’d love Shane Long with us, i hope getting him doesn’t spend us out of affording a lb and cb. cheers,

id love to see long get a chance at liverpool.hes a great goalscorer for club and country. anything would be better than ngog and 7 million would not be a big spend i have a feeling he could end up a kop hero.

  16. westcoastLFC says:

Dont care if he is better than NGog…we shouldnt be aiming to pick up 24yr olds who just had their 1st truly productive season in the Championship. For a bargain he might be worth it but the money would be better spent elsewhere.

Hey brother john, in ireland, we’re very fond of sarcasm…
