The speculation linking Liverpool with a new left-back seems to be the topic of the day. Firstly it was Uruguay international Alvaro Pereira being linked with a move from Porto to Liverpool today and now Hamburg’s Marcell Jansen has emerged as another contender to become the new first choice left-back at Anfield this coming season.

Jansen has done very well for the German national team and caught the eye of many clubs across Europe. But Jansen did not have the best of seasons last term at Hamburg as his club had their worst domestic finish in almost a decade. This may just prompt Jansen to find a new club after his €8million move from Bayern Munich to Hamburg in 2008.

My biggest concern with Jansen is that he is too attack minded and his defensive abilities may not be what Liverpool need right now. Dalglish would like to build a solid defence and then let the attack minded players go and score the goals. With Glen Johnson on the right, who is also attack minded, we can not afford to have two attack minded wing-backs unless we want to be winning games 4-3 the whole season.

A fee of £10million is being mooted for Jansen who is still only 25-years-old but has managed to chalk up 36 caps for the German National team.

If this rumour carries any weight and Liverpool are actually interested in signing Jansen, what is your take on it? If he is to come in and do as well as the last German wing-back we had, Marcus Babbel then Jansen would be a great signing for us.

i hope, above the other speculated names, that Jansen will sign with us. he is the player profile Riise, taller, stronger, who carry, and we might cover right Downing”s back.
