Liverpool’s spending this summer seems set to continue as Uruguay international centre back, Diego Godin has emerged as a top target for Liverpool this summer. Liverpool were strongly linked with Phil Jones before the defender joined Manchester United and it is understood that the Reds are still in the market for a central defender.

Roy Evans came out and claimed that Liverpool still need a new centre back this summer in order to challenge this coming season. “I do feel we need to find a centre-back, as we seem a bit short at the back, and that’s a worry,” is what the former Liverpool manager said.

According to Fanatix, Godin is now a target for Liverpool and we would be up against Chelsea to try secure the 25-year-olds signature. Chelsea tried to sign Godin in the January transfer window but his club, Atletico Madrid refused to sell him and thus Chelsea had to sign David Luiz.

Atletico currently value Godin at £15million after they signed him for £6.6million last summer from Villarreal. There is also a suggestion that Poulsen could be part of the deal as the Danish midfielder would go to Atletico. This would be great news in my opinion as I think Poulsen is part of the dead wood that must leave Liverpool this summer.

If it comes down to race between Chelsea and Liverpool to sign Godin, I think we will have the upper hand. Luis Suarez could easily talk to Godin as they are international team mates and convince him to join him at Anfield. Godin may not walk straight into the Chelsea starting lineup as they have Terry and Luiz already whereas at Liverpool there is a huge fight to partner Carragher in central defence between Agger, Skrtel and Soto and it is a fight Godin may win.

What are your thoughts on Godin if you know much about him or have seen him play?

At his best Agger is better than Godin but because of Aggers constant injuries Godin would likely be a regular.

Fight to partner Carragher? A fit Agger is our best defender and I have a feeling that he’d be fit this season. Carragher is ageing and whether we like it or not he’s not that top defender he used to be for us. He’s still good enough to play but if we want to be in the top 3 or 4, we need better! Godin is a top player that I’ve watched play and I would love to see our defence like this,

    Cissokho——Agger——Godin——Johnson/Kelly

    Wont happen not english.
Dont get these signings all i have is
trust in kenny but we do need foward and not ngog
need centre back and left back .
foward sturridge cause his over price and english i think
the other places i really cant think of any team seem to be placed around carrol

  4. m kop says:

It would be great if they could use Poulsen to lower his price, just don’t expect them to value Poulsen much.

I think problem is whit Liverpool that they are buying him now when he is rated 15 mil. and not the year before when he was rated 6 mil.
    Still better late than never.

  5. magnumopus says:

If the price is a problem then why not get a player like him last year that then will be worth 15 million next year! This isn’t rocket science is it! They have to be out there with so many clubs playing at such high level of quality all over the world. Or, are we really only looking in England?

  6. sai says:

    @magnumopus;thats business pal.

i believe godin wont be bought coz of the rule of socceronomics.. its just chaos theory pal..
we will be signing moslty english player..
    anyway, lets wait and see…
    kenny we trust you..!!

Fight to partner Carragher? No matter what and however much Suarez has to say to convince Godin to join LFC, the very thought of partnering our legendary hoofer would scare the daylights out of Godin.

  8. Jevon says:

everyone assumes Daniel wont put in a decent fit spell????? he is due some!

  9. Chuky 64 says:

He is gona be a great signing for liverpool. He wil be a great asset for us. With injury prone aggar and agein carragher. He could fill in the voild at centre back.

  10. Jean-Marc says:

I agree fully with Tony, until LFC get a centre back, left back and another striker we can forget about silver wear. I don’t understand why we still have not addressed those issues. Its like we just refuse to learn from the past. If Dagger and Cara are injured can u imagine facing Chelsea or United, and that’s just our luck. We had a great midfield already last season. We need a striker with power and pace if we want to play football not just long ball to Carrol which seems like what we are aiming for with Downing purchased for that reason?

The last pre-season game was perfect evidence of this long ball shite! Look at the contrast btwn the 1st half when everyone was looking to ping the ball up on Carrols head and the second when we started playing on the floor again.

  11. jd iron says:

First and foremost we need a decent left back, followed by a good back up striker for Suarez & Carroll!

Why the sudden urgency for a new centre back? Is everyone forgetting Martin Kelly is a centre back and as good as his performances have been at right back, we have quality in Glen Johnson and young Flanagan. I appreciate Kelly can and will learn and develop better with the experience of playing at right back but would this not hold up the development of Flanagan? Let’s not forget Johnson is at his best on the right side and must surely be our strongest right back?!?! Personally I want to see our strongest side week in week out and Johnson is in that XI.

If Agger can keep fit then he’s got to be first choice with either Carra or Skrtel with Kelly, Soto and Ayala as back up! Lets not foget Skrtel played in every league game for us last season.

Whoever we sign, in King Kenny we Trust, let the good times roll. YNWA

  12. Frank says:

Well said JD, the problem is if and when Agger gets injured, Kelly is not ready for the CB position, Soto is not good enough. We definitely need a quality addition at CB.

What the F*@$ is the SCUM advert doing on this site.

    Absolute disgrace!!
I’d strongly suggest getting it removed.

  14. Saso says:

How about a signing who is gonna get Anfield buzzing with flair and brilliance. Someone who along with Suarez can destroy any defense. Surely a marque signing will pay his way in shirt sales alone. Oh and by the way Godin would be class.

  15. sultan says:

he is good enough please kk & co. sign him.

  16. jc says:

k then dont bullshit liverpool and just sign the man
and can people stop mentioning soto in our next season plans
he is average and everyone knows that
vs west brom, dear god fairly sure odemwingie turned him at least 4000 times and he got us knocked out of europa
its not hard liverpool, sign godin, sign enrique (i personally think we should be singin cissokho but ive heard that isnt happening) sing this young mexican lad bueno, and get in the aguero race
    get competitve liverpool
    WE WANT 19
