Why has Sammy Lee left Liverpool?

Many in the 2007/08 season felt Rafa had lost the plot slightly after losing his assistant Pako Ayestaran and the appointment of Lee at the time seemed to make little difference as the Reds finished 4th in the table. Still, the combination seemed to work well enough after that, and Sammy was said to be well loved by the players.
With Clarke and Dalglish said to be in so close communication about tactics though, something King Kenny has done in the past with the likes of Ray Harford at Blackburn, it was difficult to see where Lee would fit in. He still shouted out orders from the touchline last season, but it was patently clear that all of Dalglish’s conversations in the dugout were with Clarke, rather than Lee.

With all the facts not known, we shouldn’t speculate too much about the timing of his departure, but there are rumours circulating that Sammy will return to the dugout alongside Fat Sam at West Ham. With Neil McDonald already his assistant and Kevin Keen first team coach, this does seem a little unlikely at the moment though.

Whatever the facts of the matter, I wish Sammy good luck for the future; he has never been anything less than a great ambassador for Liverpool Football Club.

Kenny should bring back paco ayestaran. One of rafa big mistakes letting him go.

  2. Bill says:

Too true Brian, bring back Paco.

I also wonder if Sammy has been talking out of turn, John Henry and the new Liverpool Way is very strict about talking to the press.

  3. Burt says:

Paco wanted to return to spain didn’t he? A little harsh calling it Rafas mistake. From what I’ve read Rafa was pissed when he left.

I believe Sammy was the ‘get up and go’ at Liverpool and as the ying to rafas yang. Rafa did’nt get too close to the players and needed someone of Sammy’s personality and qualifications to link the players to the management.

Kenny is a personality all of his own though. He takes players to Boyzone concerts when they sign!! I remember J.Redknapp saying he stayed with Kenny and his missus when he 1st signed for us as well. Unlike Rafa Kenny is not only a fooytball manager he is also a man-manager. Hence the reason, in my opinion, why Sammy in is now surplus to requirements.

5Times, that is very harse, Sammy has been a great servant. He may not be top manager caliber but his commitment and passion for the cause should never be questioned and I think he is a half decent coach if not the best. I would suspect you were a blue nose or manc if it wasn´t for your name…

  7. Kenny's Puma Boots says:

5 times probably has no idea that Sammy Lee was involved in 2 of the 5 wins and was there for 4 of them.
A typical Sky generation tit in his twenty’s who thinks he has seen everything.
He said ‘nout’ you say? The typical sky generation bell end that wants our linen washed in public too.
If you said that in the Albert boozer near the ground you would be knocked out and rightly so.
You probably hate the no news coming from the club regarding transfers.

Sammy always looked second rate, probably to do with his eyes so close together. He may be Liverpool through and through but Clarke is by far the superior coach. He always looked a bit thick on the sidelines with his tracksuit. A bit like a mungo relative you wheeled out to keep everyone sweet. Dear old Sammy. Maybe some sense rather than blind loyalty maybe coursing through Anfield at present. I hope so.
