It is no major surprise that Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing has come out and said that he will not be committing to a new deal at Villa Park. Who would honestly want to remain at Aston Villa after they just scraped out of relegation this season? Liverpool have been keeping an eye on Stewart Downing as a potential signing this summer inorder to add some much needed width to the side. With Downing having been named Villa’s player of the season, many had thought that Villa would not be willing to sell him. But since he does not want to sign a new deal right now, Villa may decide to cash-in on him before his contract expires in two seasons time and they get nothing for him.

Downing has said, “I know the club are keen for me to extend my contract as I only have two years left on my deal.”

“My agent (Struan Marshall) had a recent meeting with our chief executive (Paul Faulkner).”

“However, I am 26, and at a major crossroads in my career, so I won’t be committing to a new deal at the moment.”

Yes you are at a crossroads Stewart and you need to make the right turn and coming to Liverpool would be in your best interest because:
1) You would play regularly in a top side and thus boost your personal ambitions of being a top class player.
2) Being around the likes of Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard and Andy Carroll who are England regulars will enhance your national team chances.
3) You will learn a lot from Kenny Dalglish, Steve Clarke and Sammy Lee.
4) You will be part of a team challenging to be in the Top 4 whereas Villa at best will remain a middle table team. Ashley Young will be leaving this summer and there goes one of the Villa star players.
