There have been reports that Liverpool could be lining a shock summer swoop for Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton. When I first read this speculation yesterday I was in shock and my initial recation was, “NO WAY!” I then sat down and thought about the possibility of signing Joey Barton and I still came to the conclusion that this would not be a good signing for Liverpool at all, the reasons being:

Barton is too volatile a player who can loose it at any time on and off the field. We do not need such players in our squad who will have the ability to cause disruption in the changing room.

Barton is 28 years old and does not have many good years of football left in him. FSG has outlined that they are in the hunt for signing hot young talent and Barton does not fit this bill. Yes, Barton could be signed for a knock down fee as his contract is almost up at Newcastle, but even if you offer me Barton for free, I would not take him.

Barton is really a defensive midfielder and if Liverpool were to sign him then he would be up against Lucas in getting a starting lineup birth. In my opinion, I would rather have Lucas start ahead of Barton which means that Barton would be a squad player and with his attitude he will not be happy sitting on the bench. Barton has played effectively at times this season on the right side of midfield for Newcastle like the way Kuyt has been playing for Liverpool. Yet again, I would pick Kuyt over Barton any day.

There is a suggestion that Barton would do well at Liverpool by forming a partnership with Andy Carroll. Barton was the provider of eight of Carroll’s goals at Newcastle this season prior to his move to Anfield in January and Dalglish could look to reunite the pair. I would much rather have a proper winger or creative midfielder come into the side to supply Carroll and Suarez.

Should Liverpool sign Joey Barton?

I would rather have Dick Barton. (You need to be at least 60 years old to figure that one)

At best this “rumour” is out their to try and unsettle BArton before our game this weekend.

At workst it’s come from the depths of some journo mind who can’t wait for some truth.
