Reports today are suggesting that Liverpool have made a bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Mark van Bommel. The out-of-favour Holland star has reportedly been told he can leave his club and a fee of £2.5 million is being suggested. Van Bommel is 33 years old and this would not fit into the clubs long term plans of buying young players but signing Van Bommel in January would give us a decent player for the rest of the season in midfield.

I would much rather have Van Bommel in the midfield along Gerrard and Raul than having Poulsen or Lucas! Van Bommel is the type of player who we would not need to groom and nuture as he can walk straight into the starting eleven and do a decent enough job. He has played in a World Cup final after all.

If Liverpool are indeed interested in Van Bommel then they should push ahead with this signing as we would not only be buying a quality player but we would have a player with years of experience to guide the team through the rest of the season.

Should Liverpool sign Mark van Bommel?

As soon as I saw this I emailed my mate who lives in Munich to see if he’d heard anything, his answer was no and contary to your statement about him being unsettled my mate told me he’s first choice at Munich and plays when fit, as witnessed by him playing against Wolfsburg on Saturday. My mate also said a move to Liverpool would not be good for us as he can’t get about the pitch and sits and passes it simple, you only had to see Alonso when played without Mascherano to realise how much an older Van Bommel would struggle. I agree that Poulsen has failed but leave Lucas alone the lad is getting better and better and is a regular in the Brazil squad now.
