Liverpool have been linked with a World Cup winner today. Let us not get too excited, it is not Villa or Xavi but rather Spain’s left back, Joan Capdevila. The Villarreal player has rejected a new contract offer from his club and thus he could be a free agent in the summer. Villarreal may then decide to cash in on him in January rather than loosing him for free in the summer.

It is no secret that Liverpool are after a left back as that has been a problem area for the club this season. Capdevila is a suitable candidate to fill this role but signing him for Liverpool would go against the new owners policy of signing young talent. At 32, Capdevila is not exactly the youngest player out there and he is getting on in his age. He probably has a season or two left at the highest level so if we were to sign him we would have to expect an instant return from him and he would have very little time to settle in and adjust to English football.

Being a World Cup winner he will bring loads of experience to Liverpool and being a top rated Spanish player, his signing could just further encourage Reina and Torres to stay. Pepe Reina could be key in Liverpool signing Capdevila if the club does indeed want him. Capdevila and Reina are very close friends and all it could take is a phone call from Pepe to Capdevila and sway him to join him at Anfield.

June 25, 2010 - Pretoria, South Africa - Joan Capdevila of Spain is seen during the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer match between Chile and Spain at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on June 25, 2010 in Pretoria, South Africa.

Would signing Capdevila be a good move for Liverpool?

He’s 32, doesn’t seem to fit with NESV’s plan to sign young players.

  2. Ronnie says:

would rather have Contreo from Benfica. these are the young players we MUST be looking at if NESV are serious about making us competitive.

I think we should let the board decide and stop trying to create chinese whispers based on an un-proven tabliod piece of gossip!

There are too many of these sites, its just too common now, its instigating misscheif amongst fans…
