I was glad to see Fabio Aurelio pull through 75 minutes for the reserves on Tuesday. Aurelio has been struggling with injuries ever since he re-signed for Liverpool in the summer. It is no secret that we have problems at left back, going back to last season. In the summer when Insua, Dossena and Aurelio (at that time) had left the club, Roy Hodgson was walking into a squad without a left back. Hodgson went back to Fulham to sign Konchesky and he has been our first choice left back this season.
Konchesky has not covered himself in much glory so far this season and is proving to be a weak link at times in or defense. So the news that Fabio Aurelio is fit again and ready to return to first team action is much welcome. Aurelio is a decent left back, much better than Konchesky in my opinion, but his biggest weakness is his injury troubles. Aurelio can play 3 to 4 games for you in a row and put in great performances and then in the fifth game he limps off with an injury and is out for 5 weeks. If there was just some way of preventing these injuries we may not have a problem at left back as Aurelio would be the first choice all the time.
Just to show the lack of depth we have at left back, we had to call upon Daniel Agger who is a center back to play left back for us for a couple of games early on in the season. Based on the poor form of Konchesky and the injuries to Aurelio, signing a left back is a priority for Liverpool at this stage. But let us hope Aurelio can remain fit for the rest of the season as he is the best we have in that position right now.
Insua was at the club when Hodgson arrived – he decided that the guy was surplus to requirements and that we could afford to send him away with no transfer fee coming him…
