Speculation about Pepe Reina’s future is making the headlines again this morning. Can they not give Liverpool a break for once and let us bask in the glory of beating Chelsea for a while rather than try to destabalise our ship as they have been doing throughout the whole season?

I recall not too long ago that there were reports that Reina and Torres were going to leave Liverpool in January as they were not happy that the new owners were not going to buy any new players in January. That speculation was quashed as the new owners have been on a mission to talk one on one with our star players and convince them that they have a future at Liverpool.

But this morning reports indicate that Reina will consider leaving the club at the end of the season if he is not satisfied with their progress. The Spaniard has ruled out asking for a move in January but said he wants to feel certain that the team will challenge for major honours under the club’s new owners, New England Sports Ventures.

“I signed a six-year deal seven months ago and I’m happy at the club but every footballer wants to be competing for trophies and winning things,” Reina was quoted by the Daily Mail. “I will stay at Liverpool until the end of the season. I know there are rumours of me leaving but I want to make it clear that I have no intention of going back to Spain.”

Now based on that statement from Reina, it is clear he will be with us until the end of the season but there is no guarantee after that. If we win a trophy this season or qualify for the Champions League then I am sure Pepe will stay. What is also interesting to note this morning is that Arsenal are yet again being linked with a move for Reina. Now why would Reina leave Liverpool and go to Arsenal seeking trophies when I can not see Arsenal winning much more than us in the near future?

The reason I say loosing Pepe would be worse than loosing Fernando is because I believe Pepe is one of, if not the best goalkeeper in the game today. I can not honestly think of anyone in the world right now we could replace Pepe with. It is not easy to come across such talented goalkeepers and I give credit to Rafa for signing Reina. Not only is Reina a great shot stopper and distributor of the ball but his love and passion for the game are second to none. Pepe is the kind of player you want on your side to lift the team spirits when they are low. I recall watching Pepe in the World Cup, he was on the bench during the tournament but he was usually the first player up to go celebrate with the rest of the team who was playing when a goal was scored. When Stevie steps down or retires as captain and if Pepe is still there, he is the only player I can see taking over the captains armband.

Losing Torres would also be a huge blow to Liverpool as on his day and when he is on song, there are no better finishers in the game. I do not have to explain to you all how great Torres is as I am sure you know all about him already. But sticking my head on the block, if we lose Torres we could “try” and find another replacement for him whereas I can not see us finding a decent replacement for Reina.

If Liverpool had to loose a player who would it be?

I only came on to this site because of the mis-spelling. A clever ploy by the author maybe? Or maybe not.

“Losing” it in the title – at least learn to spell if you want to be taken seriously – Plank.

    Apologies for the spelling mistake.
