A thought dawned upon me today with regards to the possibility of loosing Mascherano to Barcelona in the summer. It looks like Alonso may just stay now since Real Madrid are saying they can’t afford the 35m pounds we want for him. But if Mascherano leaves, we will need another holding midfielder. Lucas has stepped in at times for Masch but I have little faith in Lucas. How about Agger filling in the Mascherano role?

Football - Liverpool v Blackburn Rovers Barclays Premier League

Agger is a center back by profession but I am sure he can be turned into a very effective defensive midfielder. He can obviously tackle well and he is one of the best center backs I have ever seen with the ball at his feet. He can pick out a good pass and as a center back he is great at stepping with the ball out of defence and launching an attack. And not to forget his rocket of a left foot.

What do you think about this?

I see where your coming from, but clubs looking to win the title need recognized and accomplished holding mid fielders for what is one of the most difficult and specialized positions to play in.

Technically, you have to be supreme to play in this role which is why most def mids are shipped in from Brazil, argentina or France. My bet is Agger probably started of as a centre mid much like Rio did, but they lacked that edge which is why they are playing and looking so comfortable at center back.

I hear you Burt and agree that we actually do need a specialist for this position. But I wonder who could we possible by to replace Masch? Any suggestions?

dude… agger is great centre back and playin him in a defensive role is not such a good idea considerin d players plessis, spearing, alonso, lucas who can play excellently in tat pos… with agger in def and another of d above mentioned players than it would be greater attackin instead of makin more defensive team… and dont forget the distance masch covers without d ball and he has a quick feet… at d moment lucas n spearing r our only options if masch leaves

How about Marcos Senna from Villareal to replace Masch if he goes.

gerrard at right back? we are trying to score goals here? im sure gerrard can play that position well but let’s keep him up top to support liverpool’s number 9!

I’ve actually always envisioned him either in central or left midfield. As good as it is to have class from the back, when the talent is that evident it’s a crime not to send it forward.
