Sami Hyppia has forked out almost £23,000 to rescue a Merseyside hospital charity appeal. The Red defender stepped in to make up the shortfall for a playroom at a new Arrowe Park children’s accommodation complex. The big hearted Finn said “As a parent myself I realise how difficult it must be if a child is being treated for a serious illness and I wanted to make some contribution to enable this facility to be built”. Rafa and Jamie Carragher have also got behind the appeal and Gerrard is set to donate his shirt from this weeks clash with Real at Anfield for the cause.

It’s great to hear players giving back something to the people within the Merseyside community. I know with today’s crazy football wages Sami won’t miss £23,000 too much but still it is not an amount of money to be sniffed at and he must be applauded for simply donating it on the spare of the moment after hearing of the charities problems on the radio. It would be great to see more of this in todays employment/financial environment where the average EPL players wages far exceed that of the normal guy on the street. It could go a long way in repairing the increasing separation many fans feel from the stars they watch on the pitch every week.

Good on Sami .Glad to see our players leading from the front and I hope a lot of other premiership footballers follow suit and help support good causes in their local communities too.Perhaps this should cross their minds when they are thinking about upgrading their 08 ferrari to the 09 model !
I believe they could do a lot with their time and this would go some way to improving the reputation that a lot of these ‘prima donna’stars have…
