According to reports this evening, Maradona has managed to convince Javier Mascherano to be the new captain of Argentina. Initially, Mascherano said he would not want to take up the Argentina armband but after Maradona visited the Liverpool star this past weekend he has managed to convince the player. “I convinced him. While I am in charge I need him as captain,” Maradona said.

If this information is accurate, congratulations to Javier. It is an amazing honour for one to captain such a great footballing nation. Being in South Africa myself, I am looking forward to the World Cup in 2010 and it would be amazing to see Mascherano lifting the World Cup for Argentina in 2010.

We are blessed with leaders at Liverpool. We have Stevie G as our captain who I just do not understand why he is not captain of England. Then there is Carra who is the vice captain and could easily be the captain if need be. Sami has been captain before and has done a great job. There is Torres who captained Atletico Madrid. Yossi who is captain of Israel. Robbie Keane who is captain of Ireland and captained Spurs last season and now the captain of Argentina.

Glad to see that Masher has came to his senses and accepted the captains armband for the Argies. I feel it will make him a better player in the long term. Now lets just get that England armband on Stevie G instead of Rio and that clown Terry..
