It is no secret that Liverpool needs a new left-back. Riise has been commanding the left-back position for many years successfully but now it is time for us to have a new player in that position. Fabio Aurelio came in and did a good job this past season but he seems to be very unlucky with injuries and we certainly need cover for him. Up steps the name Andrea Dossena.

I have not heard much about Andrea Dossena, just that he is on the verge of signing for us from Udinese in Italy. According to a report in The Sun, it is believed that he would cost us £8m and that a deal for the left-back is almost done. I have admired Italian wing backs for a very long time. Italy has produced some very good wing backs over the years. Of recent times you just have to look as far as Grosso and Zambrotta. Hopefully Dossena could be just as good.

Dossena is 26 years old which is a good age. He is not too old and not too young. The fact that he has one national cap for Italy shows to me that he does have some potential. What is important is that I hope he can attack well and supply a telling cross. I was watching some footage on LFC TV from a couple of years back and saw how effective Stig Inge Bjornebye was on supplying crosses into the box from the left. We need a player like that again and I hope Dossena can do the same if not better the efforts of our previous left-backs.

The signing of Dossena could signal the end of Riise’s time at Liverpool.
