Piotr Zielinski has joined Napoli, but is now claiming that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign him ‘badly’ during the summer.

The 22-year-old found himself top of Klopp’s transfer target list this summer as the manager took on his first transfer window with Liverpool.

It was no secret that there were strong connections with the midfielder, and he was even reported to have had a £11.75m bid thrown at him.

It wasn’t just the Reds that were interested in the Poland international, with Italian giants AC Milan also linked with the player, however his services were eventually secured by Napoli.

Liverpool currently see themselves eleventh in the Premier League with four points, ahead of their next home game tomorrow night against PL champions Leicester City.

The attacking midfielder says he was left with a difficult decision, saying to Polish media oulet Przeglad Sportowy via Liverpool Echo: “There were days when I was walking out of home, looked into my mobile and I didn’t know what to do.

“I spoke a lot with Konrad Golos and Tomasz Dawidowski – my managers from the agency representing me.

“Everyone said: ‘Great offer, Klopp wants you, it’s a fairytale in terms of finances’. All fine, but I wasn’t convinced.

“I was driving my car and I said to my girlfriend: ‘No, red light, I’m not leaving’. I felt great in Empoli, I didn’t want to leave the lads when we were battling for the European places.

“My head was a mess. Liverpool finally got a plane and I met with Jurgen Klopp. He said he wanted me in his team. I saw a different world and after returning my head was even a bigger mess.

“I really wanted to start the preparations for the new season with a new team as soon as possible,” he added.

“I knew that Liverpool wanted me badly and I knew they would return to the talks as I got that promise in January. It didn’t work out for them with Udinese at the end.

The Reds face Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester at Anfield tomorrow, in what will be the side’s first game in the new expanded Anfield.
