Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario is being watched by Liverpool and a number of other clubs, according to the Record in Portugal.

The 23 year old has been monitored by the Reds and Manchester United since he starred in Lisbon’s youth setup but his rise to first team prominence over the past two seasons has increased interest in the Portuguese international.

Atletico Madrid are also keen on signing the player and enquired about the player at the end of last season but no deal was made. Mario has been an important of Jorge Jesus’s Sporting side who are running Benfica close for the Portuguese league title this campaign. They are two points behind with 2 games to go, having lost only twice all season. Sporting last won the title in 2002.

Mario has been in excellent form this season with 7 goals and 12 assists in 44 matches in all competitions. He predominantly plays as a right winger although he can play more centrally.
