Napoli and Belgium winger Dries Mertens is on the verge of signing a new contact with the Italian club, according to Tuttomercatoweb. The 28 year old was linked with Liverpool back in January and his contract negotiations were reported to be stalling but it now looks like the Belgian international will be getting a new deal.
The new contract is set to be extended to 2020 and although negotiations have been going on for a long time, they could be concluded as early as next week, the Italian website reports.
Mertens has been in good form for Napoli this term as the club sits second in Serie A, six points behind Juventus. Despite being mostly used as a substitute by controversial manager Maurizio Sarri, he has so far scored 11 goals and provided 5 assists in all competitions this season. He scored a hat-trick and claimed an assist in a man of the match performance against Bologna last night in a 6-0 win which kept them in touch with the league leaders Juve.
