Liverpool defender, Jose Enrique, has predicted that he will play for Liverpool again if he stays at the club, sighting that there is only one other left-back in Alberto Moreno.
Enrique has said, “In the squad here we only have one pure left-back (Alberto Moreno) and I know that if I stay I’ll play. I want to prove that some are wrong.”
Talk about confidence coming from a player who in his own words has said he has been “alienated” by boss Brendan Rodgers after joining Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini in being left out of pre-season tours.
The Spanish defender went on to say, “I’m in a difficult position.
“The club have alienated Balotelli, Borini and me.
“I have a year left on my contract and I imagine the club will want to sell, but I still want to stay and fight as I always have.
“But if a good offer came (elsewhere) with more years of contract and more chance to play, I’d look at it.
“I will not give up. I know from experience that football changes from day to night.
“I feel fine after two years with knee discomfort. Plus in the squad here we only have one pure left-back (Alberto Moreno) and I know that if I stay I’ll play. I want to prove that some are wrong.”
Young Joe Gomez is currently the first choice left-back at the Liverpool having joined the club from Charlton in the summer. The 18-year old managed to impress during pre-season and is now keeping Alberto Moreno out the side. This current situation means that Enrique is now third choice left-back.
It is no surprise that Brendan Rodgers is looking to get rid of Enrique. The defender has been plagued by injuries over the last few seasons and when he has been fit, he has not given the coach and fans much confidence. Enrique is really taking a gamble here by wanting to stay and fighting for his place. We saw Fabio Borini decide to do the same last season and he hardly got a game in. Enrique should learn from that.
