5 Lessons learnt from opening day win over Stoke

3) Benteke needs time to get used to his new team mates

Christian Benteke started on Sunday and although he did not get onto the scoresheet, one can see what the giant striker can offer to Liverpool this season; a physical presence upfront, which is something that has lacked in the side.

Some may say that Liverpool will need to supply more crosses into the box for Benteke inorder to get the best out him but we saw glimpses on Sunday that when Benteke gets onto the same wavelength as the likes of Coutinho, Lallana, Ibe and Henderson he will flourish from the supply he will be getting.

Liverpool do not necessarily need to change their game just to suite Benteke but the striker can adjust to the existing pressing game. Benteke is also capable of holding the ball up well upfront and bringing in other players into the box. It is going to be very exciting to see Benteke link up with Firmino and Coutinho and later on with Daniel Sturridge.

I wouldn’t say Lovren played well, he was too easily beaten which left Gomez exposed. If BR is continuing to play him to build up his confidence he’d be better doing that in the reserves leaving Sakho to regain his place.

Please, please, please Brendan, notice the effect of bringing on Can as a defensive midfielder. We were much better. Milner and Henderson were freed to think about going forward more but between the three of them we were much more solid.
is it too much to consider Lovren and Sakho ? A competent Lovren my just highlight how susceptible Skrtel is to making mistakes.

I quite agree with you on point 5, we really need a balanced defensive midfielder to provide a shield for the back four. Attack minded opponents will easily take advantage of our defensive lapses if we start without a player that can really provide that needed protection. It’s good we got the win we desire, YNWA till I casket!!!
