Joe Allen has admitted he struggled to settle into Liverpool following his move from Swansea in 2012, claiming perhaps he underestimated the size of the challenge he would face.

The Welshman is highly rated by manager Brendan Rodgers, and has been a key player over the past seven weeks in the heart of the Reds midfield.

He looks set to start tomorrow’s crucial clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, as Liverpool look to recover from a damaging defeat to Manchester United last time out.

“I will be open and honest. In my first season there were moments when I look back and am disappointed about how I did cope with that [mental] aspect of things,” Allen told the Daily Mail.

“Maybe I underestimated it a little bit before I came. I tried to anticipate it but you can’t do it until you get here.

“Now I have come through that and the only issue this season has been injuries. Hopefully I can stay fit now and show people the best of me.”
