Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic has been given a four game ban by UEFA for his sending off in the Champions League draw with FC Basel in December.

Markovic will miss the Reds last 32 tie with Besiktas in the Europa League, as well as the round of the last 16 should his side progress.

The Serb was harshly sent off as Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League in December, when a flailing arm caught Basel defender Behrang Safari in the face – when replay’s suggested contact had been minimal.

UEFA released their disciplinary lists prior to Thursday’s first leg against Besiktas, with the news Markovic has been handed an extensive suspension a big surprise.

Liverpool will play in the competition with Alberto Moreno (2), Steven Gerrard, Mario Balotelli, Raheem Sterling, Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Lucas Leiva all having yellow cards to their name.
