Brendan Rodgers has hailed the passion of midfielder Jordan Henderson, insisting the 24-year-old has all the attributes to replace Steven Gerrard as Liverpool captain.
Rodgers also down-played an incident involving Chelsea striker Diego Costa and the midfielder, with reports suggesting the pair were involved in a tunnel bust up following the Capital One Cup semi final first leg on Tuesday.
He said: “I was sat talking to him and when I told him, you could see it meant an awful lot to him.
“This wasn’t just giving a guy an armband. For him it is much more than that.
“It is the representation of an iconic club that over the years has had many great captains and vice-captains.
“Watching Steven closely in his time, he will understand why I have given him it and the leadership qualities that are demanded.
“He will only grow and get better from it. You saw the other night he is very much a team player.
“If he becomes captain next season, he will carry it with great honour.”
