Steven Gerrard is set to announce he is leaving Liverpool when his contract expires at the end of the season, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Gerrard’s destination is as of yet unknown, but there is understood to be interest from clubs in the MLS and the Middle East, with LA Galaxy reportedly the favourites for his signature.

The 34-year-old has been agonising over whether to extend the contract offered to him by the Reds in November, and now looks set to announce he will cut ties with the club he has been with since the age of eight at the end of the season.

An official announcement is expected from Gerrard on Friday, however widespread reports indicate the clubs longest ever serving captain will depart in May.

Gerrard will leave as arguably the clubs greatest player of all time, having made 695 appearances for the Reds, scoring 180 goals, and becoming the only player to score in a League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and Champions League final.
