Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has put an end to speculation he could return to Anfield this January, by signing for first club Atletico Madrid on loan.

The Spaniard has returned to Madrid just days after making his loan move from Chelsea to AC Milan permanent.

But yesterday the reigning La Liga champions announced Torres would be joining them until the summer of 2016, promptly putting an end to speculation he could be returning to Liverpool.

A statement on Atletico’s official website read: “Fernando Torres returns to Atletico de Madrid after an agreement was reached by our club and Milan as the international striker will play on loan for the remainder of this season and all of next season.

“Signing with our club is subject to the relevant medical examination that the player must undergo to join the team.”

Torres later took to Twitter and said: “At last back home. Thanks to all that have made this dream come true. Forza @Atleti. #TorresHaVuelto”
