Brendan Rodgers says Daniel Sturridge is just two weeks away from returning to the Liverpool squad after injury.

The 25-year-old has not featured for the Reds since August 31, having suffered an initial thigh injury whilst training with England.

The forward – who scored 22 Premier League goals last season – has since suffered two setbacks for the Reds in training, and has been recently sent to America to continue with his rehabilitation.

And Rodgers has revealed he expects his main striker to be back in contention for a starting place early in the new year.

Rodgers said: “[His return] will be just after the Christmas period.

“The first stage of his rehab was in Los Angeles, he’s gone to Boston and he will move on to a specialist facility there and hopefully in the early part of the new year he will be back.

“Some point in January we will get him back and that will be really exciting for this team.”
