Liverpool are keeping tabs on AC Milan defender Ignazio Abate, as the club plan for life without Glen Johnson next season, according to the Daily Mirror.

Johnson is out of contract at the end of the season, and is yet to be offered an extension by the Reds.

The likes of Roma, Napoli and Juventus have been linked with the 30-year-old, and it seems Liverpool could also be heading to Italy to bring in his replacement.

The 27-year-old Italian is also out of contract at the end of the season, and is no closer to agreeing an extension at the San Siro.

Both full backs could agree pre-contract deals with other clubs in January, or even move this winter for a cut price fee.

Liverpool remain reluctant to offer Johnson a new deal as he currently earns a whopping £110,000 a week, despite the former Chelsea defender insisting he wants to stay at Anfield.

I wish Liverpool would just leave Italy alone. Liverpool do not for the most part have a good history with players from Italy. Just have to look at our last acquisitions of Balotelli and Borini to figure that one out. The only promising news from this report is Liverpool are planning for life after Johnson. Boy, that has been a long time coming!
