Everton have joined Liverpool in the race to sign former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o, according to the Daily Star.

The 33-year-old striker is available on a free transfer having been released from Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.

Reports earlier in the week claimed Liverpool had opened talks with the former Barcelona striker over a move to Anfield, however Merseyside rivals Everton are eager to hijack the move.

Roberto Martinez is eager to add competition for new £28million striker Romelu Lukaku, and hopes to convince Eto’o a move to the other side of Stanley Park would be the better alternative.

Brendan Rodgers remains on the lookout for a new striker, having sold Luis Suarez to Arsenal and seen a move for Loic Remy collapse, and hopes the offer of Champions League football will prove decisive in landing Eto’o ahead of their bitter local rivals.
