One of Liverpool’s stand out players this season Martin Skrtel will be staying at Liverpool according to his agent. Skrtel has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool in the last summer transfer window, with a move to join Rafa Benitez at Napoli seeming to be the most likely destination.
“I have not heard anything from Napoli about Martin,” said Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto, to Italy’s Calciomercato. “I read that they tried, but I have not actually heard anything. His relationship with Rafa Benitez? There is nothing to add about this. What I can say is that Martin Skrtel will not be going to Napoli. Skrtel will remain at Liverpool.”
Last summer it seemed very likely that Skrtel could have left Liverpool with Brendan Rodgers bringing in new central defender signings in the form of Toure, Sakho and Ilori. But out of all the new signings coupled with Agger’s presence, Skrtel has been the stand out central defender this season. It is a very good thing that Liverpool did not decide to sell him as we would have really missed his ability.
Skrtel may not be the best central defender when it comes to playing with the ball at his feet, as that is what is required in Rodgers’ tactics, but he has improved a great deal in that department and has also chipped in with some vital goals this term.
With another transfer window around the corner, it is great to hear Skrtel’s agent saying that his client will be remaining at Liverpool and not moving to Napoli. We will need Skrtel to be at his best again next season as we will be back in the Champions League and his experience will be much needed. Hopefully we will see more of a Skhao-Skrtel partnership next term as on paper that should be our best starting combo.
Everyone now lauding the praises of Brendan Rodgers & rightly so . But he has made mistakes along the way , one of which was dropping Martin Skrtel in favour of Jamie Carragher , Skrtel apart from being a good defender is like an extra striker at set-plays .If BR brings in a new C/B . Skrtel would always be part of our first team squad .
