Liverpool are being linked with a £25million summer swoop for Brazilian left-back Marcelo according to reports in Spain. 25-year old Marcelo who plays for Real Madrid has a year left on his current contract and the Anfield club may be ready to break the bank to bring in a big name left-back.

The left-back position has been a tricky position for Liverpool to deal with this season. Jose Enrique started off as the first choice but injuries have sidelined him this season and I can not see him playing again this term even if he gains his fitness. Aly Cissokho was signed on loan from Valencia to fill in at left-back but his form has been dreadful to say the least and I can not see him staying on past his loan. In came young Jon Flanagan who has been one of the stand out players in the side this season.

Flanagan is a right-back by trade but has slotted in very well at left-back and it looks like he will play out the rest of the season as the Reds first choice left-back. As good as Flanagan has been this season, it is important for Brendan Rodgers to go out and buy a quality left-back in the summer, so it is no surprise that we are being linked with a move for Marcelo.

With Liverpool back in the Champions League next season, we can now start to bid for these “big name” players who want to be playing in the Champions League. Whether Marcelo is the best candidate to fill in at left-back is another question. He is very much attack minded whereas Flanagan offers more defensive stability. It could be great to have Marcelo play against teams we should easily beat and have Flanagan come in for the bigger game where we need to be a bit more defensive.

Marcelo or Flanagan at left-back for Liverpool?

Altho all world-class players are good signings , someone like Rooney in behind S a S would be the real deal . But Marcelo & Sterling down the L/H side & Johnno & Konoplonka down the right would be great . Flanno has been outstanding & would be great back-up to Marcelo .
