Liverpool have reportedly held talks with Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyaté’s agent, Saffet Balkan, with a view of a potential move.

“I have been in talks with representatives from Liverpool and Arsenal over Cheikhou Kouyaté,” Balkan told Turkish-football.com.

“Arsenal are very interested in Kouyaté.

“Southampton and Manchester City have also been in contact with me over him.

“It’s very likely that he will be joining a Premier League club soon.”

Kouyaté is a giant 24-year old central defender who can also play as a right back or in midfield. He is a full Senegal international which certainly means he is no slouch. Having had a look at him, he stands out head and shoulders above a lot of players as he towers in at 6ft 4in.

It is really interesting to hear that Liverpool have held talks with the players agent as I would not think the Reds are in the market for another central defender. After Kolo Toure’s arrival for free in the summer and the signings of Mamadou Sakho and Tago Ilori, Liverpool are well equipped at the back and should rather be spending the money in other areas such as midfield and attack. This would really be one transfer that is really not necessary in my opinion.

Taking nothing away from Kouyaté, he seems a really good player but not what is needed at Liverpool right now. The players agent may also just be trying to up his players value by mentioning he has had talks with big clubs such as Liverpool.

Rodgers is basically saying ” I don’t rate the players I’ve bought ” Which I don’t rate the players he’s bought ;-( Especially spending over £55.000.000 Million pound on Fringe players at best in Allen Borini Assaidi Aspas Alberto Ilori, none have or will EVER make an impact at Anfield !!! If Rodgers doesn’t cut him losses, they will cost him his job sooner rather than later. And with these type of B CLASS PLAYERS,their will never be Champions League Football AGAIN…

Liverpool has been shipping goals at corners and free kicks at alarming rate gib season. This is due to lack of aerial power at the back . Skertle is tall but is really poor on headers and man marking at set pieces, Agger is injury prone and needs cover now that Sakho is also out of action. Illori needs more time to adjust to the game here. Hence it is no surprise that Liverpool are looking at another defender who could strengthen their rivals.

@Stan – have you looked at the league table at any point in the last 6 months? or looked at our form over a rolling 38-game period? you might relax if you did either of these, we are bang in the middle of where we need to be. and allen has and will continue to make an impact, alberto and ilori almost certainly will in the future (what they were bought for), and borini/assaidi/aspas can all either play a part or be moved on with small loss….and it doesn’t even need saying that with respect to players who have disappointed in central defense, the ones getting the stick are not ones bought by Rodgers (i.e. skrtel and agger).

@Sasi – only conceded 23 goals all season, so don’t think its as bad as to say its an alarming rate!

if he can play full back and midfield then he would be an awesome signing.

I think we need cover at right back. Glen Johnson has been off form and is looking like he’s lost a step.

I also think we will lose one of our central defenders at the end of the season (hopefully it’ll be Agger who leaves).

We need someone to push Kelly and Flanno
