One would have thought that by now Liverpool could have made their first signing of the January transfer window as Brendan Rodgers seems to want to do his deals nice and early. A player that has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this January is Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah.

The 21-year old Basel winger, dubbed the Egyptian Messi, would be a great addition to the Liverpool side as he is capable of coming straight into the starting lineup and contributing positively. All too often Liverpool have signed squad players who can not make the side straight away, but in Salah there would be a quality player able to add pace, skill, assists and goals straight away.

It had been thought that this deal would have been sealed as soon as the window opened but we are still waiting. One bit of news coming out from this story is claiming that Salah’s agent (via Goal Italia’s Fabrizio Romano) says talks with Liverpool are still ongoing regarding this potential transfer:

One of the possible reasons this transfer is taking so long is that there seems to be no common ground between Basel and Liverpool in terms of a transfer fee. No one really knows how much Basel want for the transfer but it is being suggested in some quarters that the Swiss side want £15million with Liverpool not willing to meet that figure.

Liverpool will surely have their reasons for not wanting to splash out that amount, maybe they are saying that he is still young and untested in the Premier League, therefore his fee should be lower?
In the past Liverpool have missed out on some good signings because they were not willing to meet the transfer fee.

Sometimes it is worth taking a gamble on a player and just paying a high transfer fee, and I think Liverpool should do that with Salah before we miss out on him and he joins another club. As his agent has stated, there are other clubs after him and the delay may also be due to Salah weighing up his options. Liverpool must go out and show Salah how much they really want him and get him to join the club as soon as possible.

  1. Look Liverpool want him and he wants to join Liverpool, Basle don’t really want to sell him and are holding out for more money that’s called business, other clubs have seen Liverpool’s improvement and their shrewd acqusitions recently and are hovering in the hope that perhaps there is a snag and with the endorsement of Liverpool and the media might just get lucky and make a steal, again this is normal, also the agent has got itchy greedy little ambitions of his own, once again this human nature, if he is meant to come to our great club it will happen, this will not only benefit him as a footballer but also a person, I don’t think he realises yet, that a club like liverpool is not only about football it is an experience only the blessed get to sample. saying all that I too hope he signs so pull yeah finger out FSG.

Anyone who thinks Liverpool are a club who will fork out extra cash above and beyond what they think a player is worth just to push the deal through are going to be disappointed. It’s not how the club do business any more. Maybe they’ll go a little bit above their evaluation, but maybe Basel as are asking 4 or 5 million more than what we are willing to pay. It’s easy to say “go on, just pay it” when it’s not your money but when in your lifetime have you ever seen that kind of cash? I don’t want our club to waste millions of pounds when they don’t think it’s right. That’s money that comes from ticket sales and merchandise i.e. it comes from us, the fans.

You say that “sometimes it is worth taking a gamble on a player” and that you personally would be willing to do that. Again, it’s easy for you to say that when it’s not your money but in fact the person who will make the decision is Rodgers. He’s the one gambling with club money and he will decide how much of gamble he is willing to take. Let’s face it, almost every transfer is a gamble to some extent, you simply don’t know what you are going to get. Rodgers and his backroom staff are the experts, so I do find it odd that fans who know next to nothing about a player are telling professionals at a massive club like Liverpool how to do their job. They will decide if the gamble is worth it and, if Salah turns out to represent to much of a gamble at the price required, we won’t buy the player. Fans will be disappointed but I have to insist that it would be GOOD business in that case. We should never waste money on players the club doesn’t think warrant the fee that is being asked.

I agree. We should not forget Carroll, Downing, Borini and Allen.

    • tgan says:

Very well said!!!…………………we have a valuation and that is that!!!

    • Shane says:

I agree to a certain extent but if we continue to do business this way we can stand over our transfer principles all we want. We’ll be watching other clubs qualify for the top 4 but at least we stuck by our guns! It’s very possible we have chanced our arm with a lower bid than his quoted worth, so let’s not assume we are above board here and evil Basle are to blame. If another club made a derogatory bid for one of ours we’d be up in arms. A little hypocritical to be aghast at another club.

      • Lee says:

Agreed Shane. Lets not be fans of a ‘smug’ championship side, proud to have crap players nobody else wants bought on the cheap! Some people talk crap don’t they?

        • Richie says:

Lee I agree with u… Atleast Kenny Dalglish took a risk to sign Andy Carroll £35million and Stward Downing £18million at the end of the both of them were FLOP. So why can’t Brendan Rodgers take a risk by signing one of the best player people have been talking about for just £15million pounds Mohamed Salah. Guys the matter of the fact is that LFC is too Greedy, not FCBasel.

    • Jas says:

To be honest, I don’t think Brendan has much if a say in transfers. He keeps mentioning the guys in the transfer team ” looking for the profile of the player we need “.
And many other statements like that. Plus you could tell he wasn’t happy on not paying up for Mkhitrayan BEFORE Borussia Dortmund came in. Read between the lines of what he says and has said..

  3. David says:

Liverpool have been very tight with there transfers… I dont see them playing £15mil. It would also put them well over there net income. They will likely be looking for a partial payment or Cash+loan with option to buy…

  4. Jonaz says:

fsg n the lfc mgt sh’d do busines quickly lyk hw they dd last summer. I knw by nw salah sh’d av been an lfc player. They sh’d continue dragging their feets n tottenham will jxt enter n buy him away. Remember that suarez would furious to leave if we do nt qualify for champs league, n we need quality players to help fight for cl spot. We need quality players.

    • tgan says:

Why would Suarez be furious?, he is going to play CL football with Liverpool, the top scorers in the PL during 2013 (84 goals)………….think before you write!!!

      • Deano says:

Think before you write, who the f*ck do you think you our !!! Liverpool won’t get Champions League next season, and it’s due to the club penny pinching EVERY DEAL.And I think it will be Utd who take the 4th place so their fans will rub it in liverpool’s faces all next season…

        • Ecky Thump says:

Are not our, little bit of a keyboard warrior there fella. If LFC want to buy him then LFC will buy him.
The club will not be held to ransom, nobody knows the details it could be the player asking to much or stalling over personal terms.
Everything in the media is speculation and conjecture. Until the club release a statement sites like this will make up dross just to keep the hits going. You only have to look at the Daily Star still writing shite about LS and his on off to Real Madrid

        • Jas says:

          Well said!!!

  5. harrison says:

Yeah he’s not a supper extra player and jez a normal one like others so he shouldn’t be that costly, coz we have players better than him on loan….. yeah I know we do

  6. mark smartt says:

Remember: who dares wins and with business comes risks, so FSG lead by example

  7. Ben says:

Why would LFC go for him in the first place if you think you have players better than him on loan? This guy is better than all the on loan LFC players and if LFC can gamble on Borini, Allen and co, why not MO, remember LFC lost out on Willian at summer and MKY just because of their penny pinch, if they actually need to secure top 4, they better start now, MO is a terrific player that will add strenght to LFC instantly. I wish to see him there soon.

    • Ecky Thump says:

LFC didn’t loose any of the players you mention because of their penny pinching the players in question chose clubs that had Champions League. If you are going to criticise get your facts right otherwise you look like you do not know what you are talking about

      • Jas says:

Erm I think you’ll find we could of had Mkhitrayan. If we didn’t piss around with the valuation! Borussia came in late in the game.

    • Scoobsie says:

Penny Pinching? I think the team at LFC are coming up with realistic valuations for players and if the deal can not be done for that value they turn their attention to other players. Lets have a look at the players we’ve missed out on over the last 2 seasons and see if we really “missed out”:
Dempsey – He had a stellar season for Spurts didn’t he? Now plying his trade in MLS. Good thing we missed that one
Sugurdsson – Yep, another one setting the game on fire at Spurts. Not missing anything here.
Willian – I’ve seen one decent display from this player so far this season and think he’s worth 30mil as much as Torres is worth 50mil (Oh and Carrol 35mil too). Great demonstration of the player not being worth the fee
Mkhitaryan – He’s started 13 games for Dortmund and got 3 goals /5 assists. Would put him in the same success bracket at Coutinho and would therefore suggest that his fee was perhaps a little over the top.

So Saleh. Before the media got onto him I for one was not aware of him on the European stage. He’s got some talent and plays fairly well in the Swiss League (Big Deal). So he scored a couple of goals against Chavski in the CPL… show’s he ‘s got talent, but has he got discipline and consistency? With no big league experience I think he’s still a big gamble and probably not worth 15mil. He might come good, but he could also be another Victor Moses (looked good at Wigan, but….)

  10. paul says:

one comment made about buying players and going streight into the first team, i am old enough to remember when Liverpool bought a player they went into the reserves to learn to play the Liverpool way, which allowed them to bed in, also back then you never heard who was signed until they made their first team apperance , yes the fans still thought that they knew better who should be signed or played infrount off, but it wasnt broadcasted to the whole world, instead it stayed within your small group of freinds.

15 mil buy buy buy asap.I watched this guys highlites from this year. This guy is unbelievable and I said to myself could he do this in the premership. Most defo he will take it by storm.15mil buy before someone else dose.He dribles past people like their not their.Imagine phil on one wing and Salah on the other feeding Saurez and Dan

  13. gamal says:

On what bases should we evaluate Salah buy?…
I guess he is a must buy type of player, only 21 with loads of potential. Excellent scoring& assist record for a Winger, with Basel he scored more than 20 Goals and 15 assists in less than a year, 17 goals for his country from 25 games ..he proved it in the CL against Chelsea scoring twice. Exceptional performance against Tottenham in the EL and another one against Brazil in the Olympics . He is the main reason for Basel success on the domestic level and even with their performance in CL was not so bad, he was awarded by CAF as the best African young talent 2012, and at the end of 2013 he was awarded the best player in Switzerland. That’s why the big giants in Europe are all chasing him, he is way faster and stronger than Sterling and better finisher than Coutinho, excellent injury record (consistency). I believe Its part of BR job to develop him further… the way Ferguson did it with many less quality players and they became super stars today.

  14. Sab says:

We should wait n c if we get him good if not never mind we will still be champains come may .May be we get hv a better player than him remmember how & when Arsenal got Ozil ?

    • simon g says:

This guy was flying under the radar untill the pool started sniffing. Now lots of teams are takeing intrest 15m its a no brainer. If we want cl football or challange for the title this is the type of player we need.if we miss this guy we will be sick when we see the player he becomes. This kid is going to be world class and to think of the millions we spent on u no who and then some.please buy this guy

  15. Morten says:

That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. We should pay 50 % over the marked value for an untested 21 year old from a league that is a low prifile as the championsship, because God forbid some russian team buys this guy at 150 % of his value… NO! If we can get him at fair marked price compared to what talent he have proven so far, then we should get him, otherwise we will get someone else. He may turn out better, someone else at his level may develope better and that part is always a gamble, where no crastyl ball of enlightenment excist. If you think this one guy is the only talented footballer aged 21 around the globe, you need your head examined. We offer £7M, slightly below his £8-9M marked evaluation. Maybe we can be pushed to £10M and imho that is what Basle try to do. £15M would be an absoluttely stupid gamble.

This kid is the real deal! Rodgers has bought crap players in the main,
and cant be bothered naming them, if we don’t pull the stops out and pay
what this kid is worth we will regret it down the line because I believe we can take him up another level and have a player worth 50 million in a couple of years, pull your fingers out LFC owners!
