Liverpool have today (Wednesday) confirmed that Daniel Agger has suffered a calf strain and will undergo further assessment by the club’s medical staff to determine the extent of the problem. This certainly means he will not be available for the Stoke clash this weekend.

Agger picked up the injury on Sunday during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Oldham in the FA Cup. The centre back limped off with 10 minutes to go and Liverpool had used all their three substitutes meaning that the Reds had to close out the game with 10 men.

Daniel Agger is no stranger to being sidelined by injuries during his time at Liverpool and one can only wonder how better a player he would be if he was not constantly injured.

The news of this latest injury will come as a set back for Brendan Rodgers as he looks to have a big enough squad to make a push for a top four finish and maybe even the Premier League title.

Mamadou Sakho has also been out with a thigh injury picked up against Chelsea but there is good news on the front with reports suggesting he could be ready to face Stoke on the weekend. If both Agger and Sakho are not fit for the trip to Stoke that could see Skrtel and Toure start which would not be a bad thing as both would be able to handle the physicality of Stoke’s game; however Sakho would be perfect to have in such a situation.

Liverpool do however have Martin Kelly and Tiago Ilori available who can also fill in at centre back. This could be a perfect opportunity to give Ilori a chance in the Liverpool squad following his arrival in the summer as he has not featured in the first team yet in the Premier League.

We now just have to wait and see how long Agger is ruled out for and hopefully it will not be too long as we really need all our players fit.
