With the January transfer window opening in a few days time, there is going to be a lot of transfer speculation linking players leaving and joining Liverpool. With our great form right now and currently lying second in the league, it would be great to add one or two quality players who can come in an make an impact on the starting eleven and help us continue our push for a top four finish and beyond.

One area Liverpool need strengthening is our central midfield. Yes, we did very well against Tottenham on Sunday with Allen, Lucas and Henderson but we need more steal and pace in there so we can totally dominate all opposition in midfield. With Steven Gerrard getting on in age, we are going to need someone long term to replace him. Derby County’s Will Hughes is being earmarked as Gerrard’s long term successor and that would be a good signing for the future.

For now, we need a defensive midfielder; Lucas is currently the only out-and-out defensive midfielder we have and he needs some competition. One such player who may be worth pursuing is Barcelona’s Alex Song.

The former Arsenal midfielder has struggled to make his mark at Barcelona and although he still wants to fight for his place at the Nou Camp, I am sure he would be tempted to return to the Premier League and play in a side which will give him much more game time than he is getting at Barcelona.

This deal may not be too far fetched considering that Barcelona have always shown an interest in Daniel Agger. Now Agger is currently the clubs vice captain but he is struggling to make it into the starting lineup ahead of Skrtel and Sakho. With Agger’s continued injury problems it may not be a bad idea to offer him to Barcelona in a swap for Alex Song. Liverpool have enough cover in central defence with Toure, Ilori and Coates able to fill in and not forgetting Martin Kelly and Andrew Wisdom in the long term. This may just be the right time to get rid of Agger whilst Barcelona remain interested in him.

I am sure if Barcelona are offered Agger and Alex Song is part of the equation they may be willing to listen to the Reds. Adding Son to the Liverpool squad would give Rodgers great options in the heart of our midfield. Against teams such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton who love to boss the midfield, we could pair Song and Lucas together and that combination would be able to dominate any midfield in the Premier League.

Interesting idea. Song would add more to the current Liverpool team than Agger does. With Sakho looking impressive Agger is just gonna be unhappy with not playing. And Song looked brilliant at Arsenal attacking and defending which Lucas doesn’t do either very well anymore. A move like this could be the difference of finishing in top 4 or not and Rodgers could buy another striker in January and LB.

No longer first choice at the club.. Pushing towards his late 20s and regularly injured. I love him to bits, but being pragmatic… He’s no longer a stalwart at the club, and sadly been at fault for a few goals this year. If we could use him as a tool to bring in a quality CM (which Song is) and a good prospect to challenge and then hopefully replace Glen (Montoya).. Then I’d say it would probably be for the overall good of the team.

  3. Alex song would definitely fit into Liverpool’s setup well. He would give Lucas a run for his money.

I like that! Song can replace Lucas and this will increase competition.
