There was a lot of speculation in 2005 surrounding the future of Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. Liverpool had just won the Champions League but Gerrard was still being linked with a move away to Chelsea.
Speaking in an interview with Clare Balding, that will air on The Clare Balding Show this Saturday evening, 21.00 BT Sport 1, Steven Gerrard revealed what was going on at that time:
“It did turn my head (joining Chelsea), because big things were happening at Chelsea, they were spending huge amounts of money and at Liverpool at the time we were struggling and my relationship with Benitez was a bit up and down.”
To be honest, at the time there was a lot of talk about Gerrard joining Chelsea, I thought that he was going to join them. But Gerrard showed how loyal he is to Liverpool and stayed and has not looked back since as he is set to finish his career at Anfield.
There would be nothing more fitting than for Gerrard to win the Premier League before he retires and the Liverpool skipper has looked at Liverpool’s chances of winning it this term.
Gerrard said, “There’s none bigger than the Premier League, and that’s the one that eludes me. At the moment we’re doing really well, but we can’t get carried away, there’s still a lot of football to be played. I’d love to be in the position we’re in now with ten games to play, that would be a dream for me.”
