Liverpool have been dealt a huge injury blow following the news that left back Jose Enrique is likely to need a knee operation.

Speaking on Liverpoolfc.com, Brendan Rodgers said, “We’re just waiting for clarification on his injury, but it looks like he’ll probably need a small operation.

“It’s disappointing because he has been out for a couple of months and we’ve tried various ways to get him back fit. But he’s still in pain.

“The conclusion will be that he’ll need the operation and we’ll assess it from there. I just need to wait and see, wait to hear from our head doctor later on today, and we’ll get a better idea of how long that will be.”

Rodgers now faces a dilemma as Enrique is undoubtedly the best left back the Reds have. Aly Cissokho who Liverpool signed on loan from Valencia has been stepping in at left back but his performances thus far have not been great.

Starting with Everton this weekend, Rodgers will have to decide if he goes with Cissokho at left back or changes things around. Following his heroics for France in midweek, Mamadou Sakho can also play at left back although that is not his preferred position. Daniel Agger has also slotted in at left back in the past and that could be another option. Failing which, Rodgers may opt to play Glen Johnson at left back and then bring in Martin Kelly or Jon Flanagan at right back.

Who should Rodgers play at left back?
