Liverpool have beaten off competition from Manchester United and Arsenal for the signature of Derby County midfielder Will Hughes according to the Daily Express.

Will Hughes has been the subject of much transfer speculation since the summer as he is being dubbed as the future of England’s midfield. Liverpool have been heavily linked with the 18-year old and if reports are accurate, they have gotten their man as they have agreed to meet Derby’s £12million fee.

Yet again, I believe Liverpool have been forced to pay too much for him as they did with Carroll, Downing and Henderson. Why English players are overvalued still remains a mystery to me. Hughes is still very young and has not even kicked a ball in the Premier League yet but he already commands a £12million fee. Philippe Coutinho arrived at Liverpool for a reported £8million; something is clearly wrong with this picture!

There is no doubt that Liverpool need some new blood in central midfield and given time, Hughes could turn out to be a super star but it is a gamble especially for that fee.

The report goes on to suggest that Hughes will sign for Liverpool in the January transfer window but I have a feeling that he will be loaned back to Derby for the rest of the season so he can continue his development.

Hughes is certainly one for the future but Liverpool need to bring in a central midfielder who can go straight into the first team now. Someone like Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye could prove to be a decent signing for the Reds.

What are your thoughts on Liverpool signing Will Hughes for £12million?

How can you say he is over priced at £12m and compare that to the signing of Downing £20m and Carroll a stupid £35m?
Coutinho wasn’t even getting a run with Inter and everyone was saying it was too much as he is a light weight! Sturridge also was suppose to be too expensive yet both have excelled!
I think Rogers is different to the previous management and proves it! Selling both Downing and Carroll was excellent! If you look at the players Rogers was linked with, it was due to CL football – lack of, that we missed out on some fantastic signings.. all cheaper that Carroll and roughly same price as Downing, yet all scoring for fun! Both Costa & Mkhitaryan would have made us so much more better!
Trust Rogers as he is making Liverpool great again! Just look at our style of play! So much more fluent and attractive to watch! Not to mention we are scoring a lot more!
