With the January transfer window fast approaching, it is time to take a look at where Liverpool need to strengthen this window. It is never an easy window to do much business in as most top players hardly leave at this stage and what makes this window even more tricky is that we are headed into a World Cup in 2014 and players wanting to represent their country in Brazil may be reluctant to change clubs just in case their form dips. Whilst on the other hand, those pushing to make the trip to Brazil may want to join a club that gives them more opportunities to play and be seen by their national team coaches.

Looking at Liverpool, we have had a very good start to the season and currently lie second in the table after 11 games. We certainly do need some strengthening come January if we are to maintain our form and finish in the top four or better yet win the league.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has today looked at the potential areas that Liverpool need to strengthen in his Liverpool Daily Post column:

Defence

“Rodgers is well off in central defence and, while there have been question marks over the strength in depth at full-back, Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson are unlikely to be usurped as first-choice for this season at least.” said Lawrenson.

With Rodgers saying that he would like to bring in players who will better the starting lineup, I agree with Lawrenson that our current backline looks good enough to finish off the season if we do not pick up injuries.

Our wing backs, Johnson and Enrique are key and if they do not remain fit then we have a problem. But is this something Rodgers will want to remedy in January? Aly Cissokho has been bought in as cover for Enrique and to be fair the French defender has not done all that well, but hopefully as time goes on he can provide to be decent enough cover. The absence of Johnson causes a slightly bigger worry as his back up options or the always injured Martin Kelly and the very inexperienced Jon Flanagan.

A new better quality right back is something Rodgers has to look at bringing in and Barcelona’s Martin Montoya would prove to be a perfect fit if we can prize him away.

If henderson could get over the ball hed have five goals this season. He should only get served volley at melwood. Ynwa.

  2. This is a great article. Liverpool need to start looking for a replacement for SG. Also BR should also recruit another defensive midfielder to compete with Lucas. The 2 wing backs also need urgent attention as well.

Enjoyed the read. I am glad someone has pointed out the need for a striker. It is easy to overlook it when SAS are playing so well. It is a pity young Yezil has not broken into the first team yet or even Morgan. We have some great young strikers that need to be given a chance. We can not afford to get a Costa or Benteke now as they will want to play straight away and that would break SAS up. Rather get someone willing to spend time on the bench.

An experienced EPL striker is what we need. Someone like Defoe or Berbatov or even Adabayor.
