5 Possible changes including Gerrard omission: How Liverpool should line up against Fulham

Wing Backs

With the 3-5-2 formation, it is important for the two wing backs to be on song as they provide the width for the side. Against Arsenal, Aly Cissoko and Jon Flanagan filled the roles but for the visit of Fulham, the fit again Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson should be recalled into the starting lineup.

We have missed Enrique and Johnson due to injury and now with their return, we can be sure to see a lot more attacking play down the flanks.

So changes two and three come in at the wing backs.

Central Midfield

Gerrard and Lucas have been the two men tasked with holding it together in the middle of the park. The two have not been standouts but have done a decent job.

Molby commented, “Arsenal certainly dominated in midfield and we didn’t get close enough to them.

“If you were judging the Lucas-Gerrard partnership just on that game you would be slightly worried. However, there have been games this season when those two have been excellent together.

“Let’s not forget that in general the team has done very well this season and those two have been a big part of that.”

Now for the Fulham game, I would take the opportunity to omit Steven Gerrard from the midfield and try out a combination of Lucas and Henderson. When you have Gerrard and Lucas together, one thing we have seen is very limited energy from the two as Lucas is not naturally dynamic and Gerrard is not the box-to-box midfielder we used to know.

Some fans have called for Gerrard to be dropped but that is a harsh call. The Liverpool captain still has a lot to offer and he just needs to adapt to a new role of sitting back and dictating the play from a deep midfield position.

With Gerrard almost certain to play in England’s upcoming friendlies, this would be a good opportunity to give him a break as I am sure he will not get one with England.

Change number four sees Gerrard rested and Lucas and Henderson starting in midfield.
