The transfer rumour mill has a new player being linked with Liverpool today and surprisingly it is a left back. TalkSPORT is reporting that Liverpool could be interested in signing Steaua Bucharest defender Iasmin Latovlevici.

Latovlevici is a 27-year old left back who is in his fourth season at Steaua and has earned eight caps for Romania. The defender has been a consistent performer for Steaua since joining the club in the summer of 2010 and last season helped the club win the league title.

It sounds like Latovlevici is catching the eye of several clubs across Europe with the left-back’s agent revealing that there is interest from big spending Monaco in France and Liverpool.

Florin Iacob, who is the players agent, told Romanian TV channel Sport.ro TV, “There is the interest of Monaco. But I was also contacted by bigger clubs and no-one should be surprised if Liverpool show interest. This I will not confirm, but it would not be a surprise.”

It would be a surprise though if Liverpool do pursue this deal. Currently Jose Enrique and Aly Cissokho, who is on loan from Valencia, are the two left back options for Liverpool. Neither of them are world class but they do a decent job for the Reds down the left. Latovlevici too may not be regarded as world class but his strike in the video below is pretty much world class:

If Rodgers is indeed lining up a move for Latovlevici or any other left back, it could mean that the Liverpool manager is not too confident in the personnel he currently has. Both Enrique and Cissokho are not the best players going forward in attack as they are both more defensively minded. So maybe Rodgers is after an all-round left back such as Glen Johnson which Latovlevici is. There is no harm at all in extra competition in the Liverpool squad as long as it is good quality competition which the Romanian would be able to provide.
