Pepe Reina’s future has taken a new twist as the Liverpool goalkeeper, currently on loan to Napoli in Italy, insists that after his spell at the Italian club he will be returning to Liverpool.

Speaking to La Gazetta Dello Sport, Reina said, “My card is the property of Liverpool, at the end of the season I will return there. Barcelona? Now I just want to do well with Napoli, for the rest we’ll see.”

What is interesting to note is that not long ago, when Reina was asked if he would return to Liverpool after his loan spell, he simply said, “No”. Pepe went on to say, “At the moment it’s difficult to think about being a Liverpool player next year. They have a young goalkeeper in Simon Mignolet and the manager prefers him to me.

“That’s the reason why I’m here and he will be at the club next year as well. There’s no reason to think I’ll be a Liverpool player from now on but we’ll see where the future takes us. It’s been a good move so far and I don’t regret what happened. I would have preferred to say goodbye in a different way.”

Reina finds himself in a tricky situation. Napoli have said that they will not sign Pepe on a permanent deal after his loan spell is up at the end of the season as they have identified Rafael as their future number one.

Meanwhile Reina has always been suggested to be the replacement for Victor Valdes at Barcelona but now the Spanish giants are said to be interested in Borussia Moenchengladbach keeper Marc-André ter Stegen and also Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois. If Barca opt to get either of these two then that would mean Reina may be a number two at best in Barcelona.

So if Napoli and Barcelona both do not want Reina then the shot stopped may be forced to return to Liverpool as he still has a contract with the Reds until 2016.
